Pennsylvania Knights Build Observatory at VA Hospital

Knights in the Pittsburgh area knew that veterans living at VA hospitals often struggle to find activities to do in the evenings once their daily programming has finished. After surveying residents and staff about how they could help, the Knights offered to fundraise and build an observatory at the hospital. The newly built facility is the first of its kind nationwide and has provided a tremendous outlet for veterans, allowing them to explore the heavens. Utah Knights Support Military Families

For the last seven years, Knights from Council 16127 in Ogden, Utah, have been working with a local US Air Force Base to deliver surplus food from the base’s commissary to a local pantry. French Knights Honor Fallen of Belleau Wood

In June 1918, the Imperial German Army was 35 miles outside Paris and advancing quickly with aims to capture the city and end World War I. At this critical point, U.S. Infantry and Marine regiments arrived at Belleau Wood to fight alongside the French. Grossly outnumbered, the Allies managed to defeat the Germans in one of the bloodiest and most heroic battles of the war. On Nov. 21, 2021, a group of Knights of Columbus in France traveled to Bois Belleau to pay their respects at a monument dedicated to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Jim Jenifer, a 94-year-old man, has been a Knight of Columbus for more than 50 years. His great-grandfather, Alfred Jenifer, was a former slave who fought for the Union Army in the 19th United States Colored Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. In May 2021, the District of Columbia State Council honored Alfred Jenifer with a plaque on his gravestone. Knight Recalls Attacks at Pearl Harbor

Louis Conter was aboard the USS Arizona when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. More than 1,170 of the ship’s crewmen died, and 2,403 total lives were lost that Sunday morning. But Conter survived, and he bravely served in the Navy until 1967 when he retired at the rank of lieutenant commander. The Knights of Columbus salutes Conter, a member of Father Nicholas Phelan Council 1875, on the 80th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
