Apollo 13 Hero & Knight Faces New Challenges with Hurricane Harvey Gene Kranz — American aerospace engineer, retired fighter pilot and NASA flight director — is a man who led one of the greatest rescue operations in history. His reputation for composure while working at NASA was documented in the film Apollo 1. Decades later, he found himself choking up in his kitchen when talking with Supreme Knight Carl Anderson about another rescue mission — one that happened in his own backyard in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Kranz is a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus and member of Father Roach Council 3217 in Dickinson, Texas. The storm surge toppled the 8-foot walls of the Poor Clare Nuns’ San Damiano Monastery, trapping the sisters and their parish pastor. Knowing they would still be at the Monastery, local Knights trekked to the island that is home to the monastery and rescued the Poor Clares and their pastor, who had been trapped for four days.
