This fall, Knights distributed coats for schoolchildren on Red Lake Reservation in Minnesota, one of the most impoverished communities in the state, and an area where winter temperatures frequently dip below zero. The donation continues the Order’s long tradition of support for Native American communities. Since 2009, the Knights of Columbus Coats for Kids program has provided more than 784,000 coats to children in need. The storm surge toppled the 8-foot walls of the Poor Clare Nuns’ San Damiano Monastery, trapping the sisters and their parish pastor. Knowing they would still be at the Monastery, local Knights trekked to the island that is home to the monastery and rescued the Poor Clares and their pastor, who had been trapped for four days. OCJ Kids collects school supplies for children in foster care who might not otherwise have what they need to succeed in their education.
