In 1991, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. But less well- known was Patterson’s deep Catholic faith. In retirement, he joined the Knights of Columbus in New Paltz, N.Y., and took great joy serving as a eucharisitc minister at the local nursing home. Called the “Gentleman of Boxing” at his death in 2006, he was remembered for his kindness and integrity.
