Jim Jenifer, a 94-year-old man, has been a Knight of Columbus for more than 50 years. His great-grandfather, Alfred Jenifer, was a former slave who fought for the Union Army in the 19th United States Colored Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. In May 2021, the District of Columbia State Council honored Alfred Jenifer with a plaque on his gravestone. Pennsylvania Knights Build Observatory at VA Hospital

Knights in the Pittsburgh area knew that veterans living at VA hospitals often struggle to find activities to do in the evenings once their daily programming has finished. After surveying residents and staff about how they could help, the Knights offered to fundraise and build an observatory at the hospital. The newly built facility is the first of its kind nationwide and has provided a tremendous outlet for veterans, allowing them to explore the heavens.
