Charity on the Rink – The Flying Fathers
0:00
In 1963, Father Les Costello of North Bay, Ontario, was looking to help raise funds for a local man who lost an eye. As a former Stanley Cup Champion with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Father Costello gathered a group of priests to play a charity hockey game, and it was at that moment, the Flying Fathers were born. Today the team continues this legacy with a new generation of priests, many of whom are Brother Knights. They provide an opportunity for families to enjoy a fun event that raises awareness for vocations to the priesthood.

Monsignor Bernard J. Quinn, an associate member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a military chaplain in France during the First World War. Following a mustard gas attack, Monsignor returned to the Diocese of Brooklyn and received permission to begin a ministry to African American Catholics. Despite attacks against himself and his work by the Ku Klux Klan, Monsignor Quinn’s work would culminate in creating one of the largest childcare services in the State of New York.
